  • Author: ushinzomr
  • Total Time: 35
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A crispy, flavorful blooming onion made in the air fryer for a healthier twist on the classic appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Cut off the top of the onion and peel the outer layers. Cut the onion into petals by making 12-16 vertical cuts down to the base, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.
  5. Dredge the onion in the flour mixture, ensuring each petal is coated. Shake off the excess flour.
  6. Dip the onion in the egg mixture, allowing the excess to drip off.
  7. Finally, coat the onion in breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure they stick.
  8. Spray the onion generously with non-stick cooking spray.
  9. Place the onion in the air fryer basket and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  10. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add spices like cayenne pepper or Italian seasoning to the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Make sure to separate the petals of the onion gently to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
