Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1 cup dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and sugar.
- Add cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your hands, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Slowly add cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle. Fold it into thirds like a letter, then roll it out again into a rectangle. Repeat this process two more times.
- Cut the dough into triangles. Place a piece of chocolate at the wide end of each triangle and roll it up tightly.
- Place the rolled croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with beaten egg.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake croissants for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can mix in a little vanilla extract into the dough.
- Make sure your butter is very cold for the best flaky texture.
- These croissants are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
